The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) began construction of approximately 600 feet of a concrete barrier wall in the existing median at the eastern foot of the Hart Expressway ramp at Beach Boulevard (State Road 212) on September 21, 2020.
The three-foot high barrier will discourage pedestrians from crossing eight lanes of eastbound and westbound traffic to reach the businesses and schools on either side of Beach Boulevard. Pedestrians can cross safely 150 feet east of the median at the signalized intersection at Parental Home Road and Beach Boulevard. The project also includes installing new directional signage for Beach Boulevard and the Hart Expressway.
Beach Boulevard from Dean to Parental Home roads and the Hart Expressway between Beach and University boulevards will be closed to traffic Tuesday, September 21, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. to allow for installation of temporary traffic controls. To avoid delays, drivers should seek alternate routes during this time. Three more road closures and detours will occur during the 60-day project to allow for construction of the wall and to replace highway signs.
All westbound Beach Boulevard traffic, including the ramp, will detour to Parental Home Road and Dean Road to Beach Boulevard. The detour will continue to University Boulevard to access westbound Hart Expressway.
All eastbound Hart Expressway traffic will be required to exit at University Boulevard and detour to eastbound Beach Boulevard. All eastbound Beach Boulevard traffic will detour to Dean Road and Parental Home Road back to Beach Boulevard.
The $671,000 contract was awarded to CDM Contracting, Inc. It is expected to be complete in November 2020, weather and unforeseen circumstances permitting.
