The Florida Department of Transportation is scheduled to resurface and perform drainage improvements on Atlantic Avenue (State Road A1A, State Road 200, Jimmy Buffett Memorial Highway) from Centre Street to South Fletcher Avenue. The 1.62-mile project is expected to improve drainage, increase infrastructure resilience, and enhance safety and mobility for all roadway users while preserving the aesthetics of the historic community. The roadway has reached the end of its service life, making these improvements necessary.
Improvements include:
- Milling and resurfacing Atlantic Avenue from Centre Street to South Fletcher Avenue
- Rehabilitating drainage infrastructure
- Installing eastbound and westbound bicycle lanes from 15th Street to Jean LaFitte Boulevard
- Replacing signage and pavement markings
- Replacing curbs and rehabilitating curb ramps
To enhance safety for everyone traveling along Atlantic Avenue, on-street parking will be removed throughout sections of the corridor to provide dedicated space for bicycle lanes and roadway shoulders.
MAER Construction was selected to complete the improvements in late 2027, weather and unforeseen circumstances permitting.
Construction is expected to occur during daylight hours. FDOT strives to work closely with the community to minimize disruptions throughout construction. Special consideration is given to local events and every effort will be made to reduce inconveniences to residents, businesses and visitors.
Lane closures will not occur between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. FDOT’s lane closure report is updated weekly at NFLRoads.com/TrafficReport. Temporary detours are expected throughout the project, including at North 11th Street, North 13th Street, South 16th Street to South 20th Street, Citrona Drive, and Wolff Street. All traffic and detours will be maintained in accordance with FDOT design standards throughout the project.
Temporary pedestrian detours are expected at locations throughout the project. Crosswalks and mid-block pedestrian crossings will be utilized as pedestrian detours.
