U.S. 17 Widening from Airport Center Drive to Max Leggett Parkway
Overview

In 2005, FDOT initiated a Project Development & Environment (PD&E) study to evaluate widening US 17. The purpose of the project was to accommodate current and projected traffic demand and to enhance safety.

In 2007, a Public Hearing was held to present the preferred alternative and gather public feedback. The PD&E was approved in 2008 and the project is now in the Design phase.

The proposed improvements during the Design Phase include:

  • Widening US 17 from two lanes to four lanes
  • Separating the flow of the traffic by providing a raised median or a southbound turn lane
  • Adding a continuous concrete sidewalk on the east side throughout the project limits and lighting along the corridor to improve pedestrian safety
  • Replacing existing swales with a curb-and gutter system to convey runoff to stormwater ponds
