U.S. 17 Widening from New Berlin Road to Airport Center Drive
Overview

US 17, within the project limits, is a two-lane undivided roadway running parallel to the CSX railroad, with intermittent sidewalks and no bicycle facilities. In 2005, FDOT initiated a Project Development & Environment (PD&E) study to evaluate widening US 17. The purpose of the project was to accommodate current and anticipated traffic demand, enhance safety, and serve existing and future land uses along the US 17 corridor.

In 2007, a Public Hearing was held to present the preferred alternative and gather public feedback. The PD&E was approved in 2008 and the project is now in the Design phase.

Both the 2008 PD&E Concept and 2024 Design Concept propose widening US 17 to four lanes. However, the 2024 Design Concept will replace the 46-foot median with a 10-foot turn lane and reduce the lane width from 12 feet to 11 feet. These modifications will allow US 17 to be widened within the existing right-of-way. Additional modifications include:

  • Increasing the sidewalk width from south of New Berlin Road to Airport Center Drive
  • Converting the intersection of US 17 and New Berlin Road to a Median U-Turn Intersection
  • Enhancing side street connections to US 17
