Why build express lanes?

Your time is valuable. That is why the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is providing choices and reliability for your daily commute. With the innovative concept of express lanes, you can pay a varying toll when you decide your time is more valuable than sitting in traffic. The choice is yours.

All motorists are faced with the same challenges related to traffic congestion, fuel economy and timely travel. Using express lanes will alleviate congestion on roadways and provide predictable travel times in an economically efficient way.

FDOT currently has two projects underway on I-295 and is proposing new express lanes at two locations along I-95.

Overview

The I-295 Express Lanes in Jacksonville offer motorists a more predictable travel option along segments of the I-295 beltway.

Tolling Schedule

The Express Lanes operate under a “time of day” tolling system. A static toll of 50 cents is charged during peak hours:

Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.

  • Morning: 6 a.m. to 10 a.m.
  • Evening: 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Toll-Free Hours

During non-peak hours, the Express Lanes are toll free.

Driver Choice and Signage

Motorists can choose to use the Express Lanes or remain in the adjacent non-tolled general-use lanes. Overhead signs display the toll amount, allowing drivers to decide miles in advance whether to enter the Express Lanes.

Express Lanes Locations in Jacksonville

There are two sets of Express Lanes along the I-295 beltway.

West Beltway Express Lanes

  • Length: Approximately 4.5 miles
  • Location: Between the Buckman Bridge and I-95
  • Northbound: Enter near I-95, exit before the Buckman Bridge
  • Southbound: Enter at the foot of the Buckman Bridge, exit before I-95

East Beltway Express Lanes

  • Length: Approximately 5 miles
  • Location: Between SR 9B and J. Turner Butler Boulevard (SR 202)
  • Northbound: Enter after Philips Highway (U.S. 1) or directly from SR 9B, exit to SR 202 or continue north
  • Southbound: Enter just after SR 202, exit to SR 9B or continue south

Transponder Required

To use the Express Lanes during toll hours, motorists must have a SunPass or another interoperable transponder.

TOLL-BY-PLATE is not available. Vehicles without a transponder during peak hours will be issued a $25 fine plus the toll amount.
