Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) infrastructure and devices are currently be installed on two miles of Heckscher Drive (State Road A1A/105) from Dunn Creek Bridge to Blount Island at a cost of $1.52 million. ITS is an initiative that uses advanced electronic technologies and applications to collect real-time traffic information to manage roadway operations in Duval County. SICE, Inc. is the contractor.
FDOT District Two uses ITS applications to monitor traffic in northeast Florida 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The NFRTMC (North Florida Regional Transportation Management Center) manages over 500 miles of ITS coverage along I-10, I-75, I-95, I-295, and several arterial roadways in over 10 counties. NFRTMC Operations staff are responsible for monitoring traffic and roadways, dispatching Road Rangers, Florida Highway Patrol, Safe Tow, Roadway Maintenance and Rapid Incident Scene Clearance within the entire District Two region, and disseminating critical information to motorists through Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) and Florida 511. Operators gather traffic data from a series of ITS roadway devices, including closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras. The devices connect back to the NFRTMC via fiber optic communications and are managed by the statewide ITS software. This information is used to manage traffic conditions and optimize roadway safety and performance.
