State Road 211 (St. Johns Avenue) from Herschel Street to Canterbury Street Improvements
Overview

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT construction on inters) completed construction on improvements along St. Johns Avenue (State Road 211) from Herschel Street to Canterbury Street November 2022.

Improvements include replacing two signalized intersections in the area with roundabouts:

  • Herschel Street and Geraldine Drive “Teardrop" Roundabout
  • Herschel Street at St. Johns Avenue.

Other improvements: new parking over Fishweir Bridge, sidewalk updates and new signage.

Proposed changes needed to complete construction of the roundabouts:

  • Eliminating the left turn from Herschel Street southbound to Woodmere Drive.
  • Eliminating the left turn from Geraldine Drive to Herschel Street and through movement to St. Johns Avenue.
  • Eliminating left turns and through movements from Woodmere Drive.

This design also requires the closure or modification of driveways in FDOT right-of-way at the following locations:

  • Two driveways on the north side of St. Johns Avenue in front of St. Johns Food Store and St. Johns Flower Market will be modified.
  • One driveway in front of St. Johns Properties and Casablanca Day Spa will be closed.
  • One driveway on Herschel Street in front of St. Johns Plaza and Harps Restaurant will be modified.
  • The east driveway on Geraldine Drive in front of Ray Hardware will become right in/right out.
  • The driveway in front of Herschel Animal Clinic will be modified.

American Lighting and Signalization LLC was selected to complete this $1.2 million project.

Hybrid Construction Open House (Wednesday, December 8, 2021)

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will be hosting a hybrid construction open house: Wednesday, December 8 2021, online at nflroads.com/VPH or by phone at (415) 655-0060 Access code 601-127-909. Citizens who are unable to participate virtually or by phone may attend the hearing in person at: FDOT Training Center 2198 Edison Avenue, Jacksonville, Florida 32205 from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. In-person attendance will be limited to adhere to Duval County social distancing requirements. Citizens are encouraged to participate virtually. Both virtual and in-person participants will be given equal opportunity to ask questions and make oral statements that will become part of the public hearing record.

During the preliminary hearing, project staff will be available to answer in person at the FDOT Urban Office Training Center located at 2198 Edison Avenue, Jacksonville, FL 32204. Citizens who are unable to participate in person may view preliminary project documents on the Documents tab on this web page. A full construction open house will be rescheduled later this year. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will host a public hearing regarding proposed changes to the roadway, striping and medians on State Road 211 (St. Johns Avenue/Herschel Street) between Canterbury Street and Melrose Avenue. Those interested can drop by anytime between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. to learn more about the proposed changes and speak with FDOT staff and consultants. A formal public hearing will begin at 6:30 p.m.
